Provenance
CC studio, Calgary
Considered one of Canada’s most notable contemporary artists, Alberta’s Chris Cran is renowned for his humorous and inventive takes on traditional genres such as still life, portraiture, landscape and abstraction. Challenging perception and understanding of major movements such as Pop art, Op art, Modernist Abstraction and Photorealism, Cran playfully combines art history with imagery borrowed from popular culture. A 2016 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada surveyed Cran’s artistic production over the past forty years, featuring over 100 paintings and drawings from the national collection, other institutions and private lenders, and is the most comprehensive exhibition on Cran ever produced.
